Saints Soccer Wins Chesapeake CupOctober 30, 2009
|
On Wednesday, September 30th, 2009, St. Mary’s boys varsity soccer team beat Severn to win the Chesapeake Cup.
It was a game consisting of two very evenly matched teams, both of which played their hearts out.
The first half was close, as many expected. The offensive production was slow on both ends, as it had been all year for both teams. The scoring was broken open by John Kluh with a goal off a corner kick that, according to Kluh, “took a good deflection and [rolled] in for a goal.” The goal was scored with 41 seconds remaining in the first half and the Saints went into halftime with a great deal of momentum.
The second half began with much more intensity. Severn now had their backs to the wall and the Saints were fighting to keep their small, one-goal lead. Their were cards given out, many arguments and quite a few horrible fouls. The Saints were lucky enough to keep their composure and not commit any unnecessary fouls. The half continued with intensity and Michael Bonacci added some icing on the cake with a goal with 48 ticks remaining. He said, in The Capital, it “means a lot to the rivals.” The game ended in a 2-0 victory for the Saints, but was a much closer and more intense game then the scoreboard showed.
Nick Hoffman made five saves for the Saints, while Daniel Farley had nine saves for the Admirals. St. Mary’s coach Myles Healy said, “Their goaltender is a really good athletic goalkeeper and came out for the ball.” This caused problems for the Saints offense but they managed two goals, which was enough for the win. Andrew McCormick, Nick Murphy and Brendan Cerniglia steadied the Saints defense and led St. Mary’s to their second win of the season.
