A Nation of Upsets: Why America loves college football

October 29, 2009

The journey begins on Labor Day 2009. Millions of Americans sit on their couches, after having the bar-b-que go strong all afternoon and enjoying the company of family and friends, and watch the opening weekend of college football. But what some saw on the television scenes was less then enjoyable. Games with margins of victory that would make Bill Belichick proud:
• Florida over Charlston Southern (Florida School of the Blind was busy that weekend) 62-3
• Penn State over Akron 31-7 (In a game where Joe Paterno's age was greater than the yards gained by his opponent) '
• Mississippi over Memphis 45-15 (A yearly ritual for Ole Miss, 6 years running. Sort of like the tradition of that)
What happened to that patriotic scene I described earlier? This isn't what America is supposed to be about. America is all about the little guy over throwing the oppressive bully , David beating Goliath. And, while there was a taste of that with Navy taking Ohio State to the brink in Columbus and BYU beating the Sam Bradford-less Oklahoma, leaving America without the Cinderella story, until weeks three and four when the upsets started coming like body piercings to Hot Topic (if you don't understand this reference, I envy you).
• #3 USC loses 16-13 at Washington in week 3
-This game is less surprising, USC has a habit of losing to early season conference opponents
• #4 Mississipi loses at South Carolina 16-10
-Ole Miss's 6th consecutive loss in an SEC opener, Each of those years they have started the season off with a throttling of Memphis, Stat courtesy of the AP)
• Penn State loses at home to Iowa 21-10
-Second year in a row PSU loses to Iowa. The home field advantage provided by the Beaver Stadium Crowd dampened by the weather "the rain and cold kinda took some air out of the balloon " said Chris Hanlon, a student at Penn State who attended the game and has regularly since 2007. When asked about why he thought the upset occurred "the weak schedule made Penn State seem better then they actually were...we're probably more like the #15 to #20 team. "

So, fans did get the upset after all. Now the BCS standings are about as stable as the Iranian government the pundits at ESPN have plenty to blabber about and fans all have reasons to claim that their team is number one. The schools who got beat up in week one now reap the benefits of playing schools out of their league (Hint, it's what makes Paris Hilton famous, besides her looks), The ones who have been on the good end of the upset had their weeks in the sun, the major programs that refused to play comparable teams early in the season are now on the outside looking in on the race to number one. Oh and don't forget the fans that willingly spent a small fortune for season tickets to these blow outs. So in the end, the little guy wins, how American.
